The house on Farmington Avenue was Sam Clemens's home from 1874 until 1891. Langdon, the Clemens's firstborn son, died at the age of two in 1872 at the John and Isabella Hooker House, which the Clemenses had rented. That same year, Olivia Susan Clemens was born, followed by Clara in 1874, and Jean in 1880.
Of the three daughters, Susy was the favorite, and her life closely parallels the life and happenings in the Hartford house. It was Susy who began the biography of her father when she was 13, who wrote musicals and plays for the family to perform, and on whom her parents and sisters showered attention.
Livy often hosted the Saturday Morning Club, a ladies group that discussed art and culture. Sam was a member of the Monday Evening Club, a group of lawyers, clergymen, and business leaders who discussed world events and politics.
