Abolition

Many of the Nook Farm neighbors were abolitionists and active in the anti-slavery movement. Francis Gillette's barn was used as a station in the Underground Railway, and he was elected to the U.S. Senate on the Free Soil ticket. John Hooker was an outspoken abolitionist, and Joseph Hawley helped organize the Republican Party in Connecticut, which supported Abraham Lincoln.
